Description:

Hooray for alternative energy! Kids will find that solar energy is just as efficient as the more familiar battery-and-plug type when they construct a solar car from this OWI robot kit. The aerodynamic shell is actually transparent when kids take it out of the box, and they can choose to leave it that way to see the parts of the four-wheel chassis in action, or paint it as shown. Children from age nine can build the car or a tractor, both of which can operate on either solar power or batteries (for those times when the sun takes a rest or kids just want to run night missions). The transmission is capable of multiple speeds, and the 1.4 volt/350 milliampere solar cell provides abundant power. What's more, kids can use the steerable front axle, rear wheel, and adjustable solar-panel mount in other projects that they design.

It really works well. From artificial or natural light. Would recommend mainly as educational. But can also be fun to play with.

4Solar Car Kit  Mar 09, 2012
By Sarah
My son and I built this together for his science fair project. We got it to work with no problem. We just needed to solder the switch so it will make a contact with the electrical wire. You can get a solder kit from Lowes or Home Depot or any electronic stores. Other than that we didn't need to do anything extra. The instruction booklet was very helpful in explaining how solar cell works. The car body is clear and you can go buy a paint for plastic models to paint it. My son enjoyed spray painted his car with dark blue. We did this and let it dried over night. While the car body was drying we put the rest of the parts together. It has an option to run on one AA battery so you can test to see if you built your model correctly even on a rainy day. We took it outside after we finished building it and it runs almost instantly. Just make sure you have a smooth surface for the car to run. If your driveway is rocky you can put a cardboard down and let the car run on the cardboard or any thick smooth paper will do. Hope you enjoy building this as much as we do. This was our first model. We had so much fun we will buy more models. Enjoy!!!
