Perfect illustration of hype! Dec 29, 2010
By villegem

My son received this "green science" solar rover for Xmas. This toy represents the perfect llustration of the green hype and its shameless promotion to young people. And THAT is the educational value of this toy!
1) The amount of plastic both in the box, in its packaging is quite impressive. 2) The photovoltaic cell offers about 220mV of electricity. It was fun to have my son cover and uncover the cell with his hand while the voltmeter was showing the voltage of the generated current. 3) The electrical motor was fine; I checked it with a used 1.5V battery 4) Once assembled the motor would not start. The cell did not generate enough power. Only under full light beaming directly over the cell would the engine start. Now let's wait for a bright summer sun with no clouds...
And all this came at great expenses of energy from China! Don't waste your time and money. One can demonstrate the same solar energy photovoltaic cells through any hand calculator and at least you can USE the calculator! Guess what is going in the recycle bin -not from its own power though-...
UPDATE: Finally a sunny day and yes O miracle the rover roved... The world is now saved... but oh no, a cloud...!

Does not work at all! Sep 19, 2011
By HomeEnergyLLC Simply put, the solar cell never worked, no matter what I did. I hooked the motor up to a regular AA battery and it worked fine, so that leads me to believe it's just junk!

Do not buy this toy. Same issues as in previous reviews. Dec 23, 2011
By SteveFromChicago I purchased this toy for my nephew as a Christmas present in 2011. After gift opening, this was the first toy he wanted to assemble and play with. He is 7 years old and had no trouble putting this toy together with very little assistance from me or the instructions. Once assembled, we took the toy over to a lamp to provide some light energy for the solar cell. The motor did not turn at all. Just like in a previous review, I removed the solar cell and shorted the motor wires across a 1.5v C cell and the motor whirled to life. The open circuit voltage of the solar cell was about 550 mv which is I would expect for a single solar cell. Once the solar cell was reconnected to the motor and placed under lamp light, the closed circuit voltage dropped to 007mv. The solar cell just does not have enough output to power this motor. DO NOT BUY THIS TOY FOR ANY SPECIAL LITTLE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE. You will be disappointed. --Steve
Photovoltaic cell too weak Apr 18, 2012
By Prabo Mihindukulasuriya The other reviewers are right, the solar cell does not generate enough power. Major design flaw. Please do not buy this product until this problem is fixed.
