5A great toy!!  Aug 30, 2010
I purchased this for my son's 10th birthday! He had never seen it before but loves Lego's and had a great time with an electronics unit that he did in school. He has spent so many hours building various things. He is asking for more for Christmas and is not even halfway through all of the projects. He is figuring out how to create his own designs. My only wish is that there was a clear explanation as to how each of the pieces work (I know very little about electronics) but he wants to understand it. Definately a GREAT buy!! (And, as always, incredible service from Amazon!!)

5Excellent Toy Choice!!  Jul 13, 2010
My kids 6 and 8 love this toy. They have been playing with it for over a week since they got it. Great for independent play!! So far this toy seems durable and has been a great gift.

5Fun gift for all!  Jul 05, 2010
I bought this for my 10 yo son's birthday. He loves to tinker with things and figure out how things work. He had never seen one of these sets, but has had a blast with it. It's the present he never knew he wanted and he loves it. The other kids have had fun, too, and it's become a sibling activity to put these projects together. So far all of the projects in the book have worked fine...I saw reviews that said some of them were outdated, but I think they must have updated the project books. Even my 12 yo daughter and 40+ husband have fun with this set!! We may have to add to it after the 500 projects are done!

5Great Toy! A little extra needed for science benefit.  Jun 22, 2010
Just like Legos and other snap building toys, the Snap Circuits sets over many different components that can be arranged into many many different circuits.

The instructions have a title, brief explanation of WHAT the circut will do, and a diagram that shows the color-coded and id'd parts arranged on the grid "circuit board". My 8 year old son is able to assemble projects on his own using the directions.

As for the HOW the various components contribute to the circuit and the success of the project, parents need to take the next step and explain that the 'R4' piece is a resistor, and that the resistor is used to control or limit the electricity in a circuit. There is a page in the project books that gives general descriptions of the kinds of pieces in the kit, but a real understanding of why a resistor was used and the difference between the 'R1' and 'R4' resistors will have to come from another source - the guides just show the proper assembly, they do not talk through the reasoning for the arrangement of the pieces.

That said, I knew that was the case going in, so we are 100% satisfied with the kit. Beats the heck out of springs, wires, and clips in the sets of my youth.

4Wonderful, but quality could be better.  Jun 02, 2010
My 11 year old LOVES this set. He saved his birthday money to buy this.

But he was very disappointed when two of the wire jumpers broke after 1 week!
