3Ants cost extra  May 02, 2010
By B. Hall
I just got my ant farm, only to discover that the ants cost an extra $4. That's not a lot, but it adds 33% to the cost. And it seems misleading when the product description says "Includes order form to receive live ants by mail."

3The Ants Dropped Like Flies.  Jul 29, 2006
By J. Weinberger
The one truly amazing thing about Uncle Milton's Ant Farm was just how quickly the ants died. Perhaps ants just aren't cut out to live in a cheesy plastic enclosure propped up on somebody's bookshelf in a high-rise apartment in Manhattan waiting for a crumb to drop miraculously from the heavens. That's my guess.

1Dont Buy It!!!  Jul 27, 2009
By A. Duffy "amazon boy"
It takes them 4 weeks after you main away to get the ants I bought this product and it tells you to put the ants in the fridge when you get them to "calm" them so i did that when I put them in the container 25 RED BITING AND STINGING ANTS came out i had to catch then with a tissue 2 bit so hard their heads got stuck on it. Whenever you open the lid the ants come racing out. All within a day my whole ant farm died. Who wants to buy red ants???

DO NOT BUY IT!!!

4House of Insect Horrors  Jun 24, 2010
By R. Rodriguez
I bought this thinking, hey wouldn't it be neat to have an ant farm? And it was pretty neat. I never order the ants offered with the product after hearing tales of dead ant tubes showing up in peoples mailboxes, and my girlfriend and I started catching them around the house. It was a sporty little affair at first, but they didn't thrive in there and starting dying, filling the place with little ant corpses. What started as a fun experiment ended as a depressing reminder of how fleeting life can be. I...I just need a little time to myself right now.

4Decent product  May 04, 2011
By Renee
We purchased this ant farm for our 4 year old. We sent away for the ants in early spring and it took 3 weeks for them to arrive. As another review previously stated, these are large red ants and they are FAST.

We thought to create a funnel into the ant farm after the recommended chilling time. Ants have sticky feet! They don't necessarily slide down paper. It was quite a comedy. We had to ferry each ant into the farm w/ a long stick while I used an envelope to keep them grouped together on the counter...We may have had a couple escape into our kitchen but we never saw any sign of them again. During the process we did accidentally kill 2 ants but successfully placed about 20-22 live ants into the farm.

Oh, we did have to buy longer tubing for the tunnel as the one sent with the farm was too kinked to allow them to pass through.

Within a day the ants started building tunnels. It's been very interesting to watch and extremely educational. We have scrupulously followed the feeding/watering schedule sent with the ants. Unfortunately, it's been about 3.5 weeks and we only have 10 living ants. Watching the ants endlessly (and fruitlessly) build tunnels and bury their dead has become sad.

So while this is an educational toy and fascinating to watch it also teaches that death comes to everything. I'm glad we did this but we won't be re-ordering ants.
