4Ok gift for insect curious children  Sep 05, 2010
No complaints. My grand daughter likes things like this and she enjoyed this gift in particular. Seemed to be as advertised.

5Kid loves it  Aug 18, 2010
I purchased this habitat from Toys R Us on sale. I was a little nervous based on some of the reviews, but my three year old really wanted to "grow" ladybugs. I ordered the larvae online the day of purchase since the form said this was the fastest route. I did select the wrong item code when ordering but didn't notice until the order went final. I ordered a refill instead of the started kit - same price anyway and I bet the same item. I live in Alaska; they arrived about 3 weeks later with 18 living and very active larvae. We loaded them up that very day and they are still good, still larvae right now.

I think that the dome could be a little different. It is hard to use the magnifying cap, you only have a very small area to see. I also think the edge where the dome meets the bottom could be a smoother transition. The food gets down in there and is pretty much stuck there. And with a three year old looking at these guys it will get in there. And once they are released it looks pretty hard to clean.

One time you look at the larvae they do seem to be dead. But if you give them some time then they are very active again. So don't give up hope after 5 minutes.

4Educational Fun  Aug 16, 2010
I purchased this for my 7 year old daughter and she had amazing fun with it. I really liked how they encourage the kids to journal daily, documenting changes and develop observational skills. My only dislike of the whole experience was the additional fee that needed to be paid to receive the larvae. I initially felt deceived and think Insect Lore could avoid this only negative by just increasing the cost of the product by $3.

3a little more info please  Aug 06, 2010
I purchased this as a gift for my grandson. The ladybug larva arrived dead. I did not see in the online literature where it was best to purchase this item in the fall/winter seasons. I did see that information on the praying mantis literature. I'm sure this product is great, he enjoyed the butterfly larva we purchased in the past. But, it was a big disappointment to him not to be able to see anything or use the circus I purchased to go with it.

5Wonderful!  Jun 12, 2010
We bought this for my four year old daughter as a gift. I was a bit nervous that the ladybugs wouldn't make it as many of the reviews had mentioned, but decided to take the chance anyway. I was happy I did. Surprisingly, every single one of our larva turned into a ladybug. I think I was more excited than my daughter to watch the transformation into ladybugs. My daughter did enjoy keeping the watering pad moist to "care" for the little critters. One of our ladybugs was a bit of a late bloomer. I thought for sure he didn't make it, but two days after the rest had emerged from their pupa, that one finally did.
