1Rip Off  Dec 31, 2004
By Mary Read "professor mommy"
Although this set does introduce some basic aspects of chemistry, the contents are not "high quality" at all. The microscope is inadequate for even seeing salt crystals and the magnifier is cloudy and has bubbles in it. Don't waste your money.

3Ok for first time users.  Dec 30, 2004
By M. Larson
I bought this kit for my son for Christmas. When we open the package to take inventory of the items that were sent we saw that only one (1) packet of color tablets was sent instead of the two (2) indicated on the box. Also the magnifying glass was in so poor quality that you could not see through it. We have done some of the experiments and he has found them interesting and even with the missing packet of color tablets I think we might be able to do all the experiments they have on their instruction sheet. The magnifying glass would have been nice to have to look at the crystals, but we just went to the drug store and bought one to use.
The kit was good for a first time user to learn different terminology and to get exposed to the idea of science and experimenting. I just wish the kit would have been complete and the product better quality and the experiments more engineered to give more results other then looking at colored water for half of the experiments.

I give it three stars because the 7-year-old son did have fun and found it interesting and engaging.

1Not very good at all...  Dec 30, 2006
By D. Mancino "D. Mancino"
The "microscope" never worked at all. It is cheap plastic and very badly made. You get a few small pieces of indicator paper and a few bags of baking soda, citric acid and gelatin plus one prepared slide you will not be able to view with the "microsope".

Very disappointing. The Discovery Channel kits are better value. Don't waste your money on this kit.

1Why didn't I read the reviews?  Oct 24, 2007
By C. Talbott "kid's mom"
I bought this at a store, but I wanted to post my BUYER BEWARE. My son is 6 and is really into doing experiments. I got this set thinking that it would be a great beginning for him. Most of the experiments aren't really that educational. Looking at colored water? Watching gelatin dry? Woo hoo...snore. The microscope is a piece of garbage. I have a lot of microscope experience, I was able to get it to work on the bubble filled (taped together, not glued) prepared slide after MUCH effort and a perfectly positioned flashlight, but I couldn't get it to work on anything else. And once I got it just right my son would nudge it ever so slightly trying to see into it and I'd have to start over. He got so bored that he just wandered off to watch TV. Not what I had in mind. We just wanted to look at a drop of pond water, but the scope isn't nearly powerful to see through a drop of water. It's a kids toy, but I think it's more for pretend science than beginner science. It's all plastic, so it's safe, but it's LOW quality. Pass on this, go with something else.

3Perfect for a preschooler, kindergartner  Jan 11, 2007
By Deanna S.
My son is 5 and we've had fun with this set. It is perfect for his age, but I would not recommend it for kids much older.

The microscope has no light, so use a flashlight or lamp with it.
